10 Things To Do in Liverpool
Places To Visit on Your Day Off in Liverpool
If you are planning a day-off, whether that be by yourself, with friends or family, why not use that valuable free time and go and see our great city – we have so much to offer! According to Trip Advisor, here are ten things to do in Liverpool.
- Liverpool Cathedral – St. James Road, Liverpool L1 7AZ, England
Here is what one visitor had to say about there visit “Such an imposing building – and a very intriguing start, relating to the design of this Anglican cathedral, which came about by a public competition held in 1901, culminating in the selection of 22-year-old Giles Gilbert Scott’s proposal. This decision ended up proving quite contentious, given that Scott had no existing buildings to his credit, and that he was a Roman Catholic.The bells of Liverpool Cathedral are the highest and heaviest ringing peal in the world, standing at 67 m above floor level. No mean fete!The stained glass windows are well worth a closer look, as are the various art / sculpture installations, including:-
* “The Welcoming Christ” – a large bronze sculpture by Dame Elisabeth Frink;
* “For You” – by Tracey Emin, which was installed in 2008;
* “The Roman Standard” – also by Tracey Emin, takes the form of a small bronze sparrow on a metal pole, and was installed in 2005;
* A 15th century ‘Madonna’ by Giovanni della Robbia, which is now situated in the Lady Chapel.Admission to the cathedral is free; car parking is available on site on a pay-on-exit basis (but free for attendance at all services). Worthy of a visit if you happen to find your self in Liverpool for a day trip!”Sounds like a great day out and its free!” - Anfield Stadium – Anfield Road, Merseyside, Liverpool L4 0TH
Red or Blue? Well, you are unlikely to be going here if you are a Blue, but here is what “red” fan had to say “Ok I am totally biased. I am a lifelong LFC fan so this is like a second home to me.” They go onto say, “The stadium is simply spectacular and the tour and museum is brilliant. If you want to see 5 European Cups it’s the only place in the UK where you can do it. Not to be missed.”
- Sightseeing Tours in Liverpool
This one is a bit ambiguous, but there many great sightseeinh tours available in and around Liverpool from the Mersey Tunnel Tour to the Beatles Tour, just book and go. - Liverpool Central Library – Central Library William Brown Street, Liverpool L3 8EW
Probably not at the top of your list, visiting a library on your day-off, but you will be surprised. Here is what just one visitor had to say “The interior of this old library has been extremely well updated, with a fantastic arrangement of stairs and escalators within an atruim under a glass domed roof. Sadly, the roof terrace was not accessible on this occasion due to works being undertaken; but if you have the chance to get out on the roof, it is well worth it as the views are great. They continue, “Ensure you visit the Picton Library within the building as it is such a contrast, as it has been beautifully preserved; just simply stunning interior décor.Overall, a fantastic facility for people living in Liverpool.”
- Merseyside Maritime Museum – Albert Dock, Liverpool L3 4AQ
Want to learn a little about Liverpool’s maritime past, well, here is a great place to start. Just read someone’s review “I really learned a lot visiting this place. Upon entering the museum, the ground floor held a variety of exhibits, with the first and second floor dedicated to the history, stories and background of those who were on both ships. The next floor up was for talks, sp we didnt go there. There was a stairs and lift which is quite roomy. The place is very spacious, clean and it’s easy to access each area.”The continue “At times it was interesting but also quite depressing. Both exhibits would be great for those who wanted to learn more on the ships, the people and the materialistic items on the ships. Everything was displayed very well with detailed information. The atmosphere on the second floor for the Lusitania exhibit was very subdued, the background music was errie. But I suppose they wanted to portray the tragedy of the event and this helps to bring that to the forefront.”And finish with “It was very busy on the day we arrived with a good crowd and even when we were leaving, more were arriving. With it been a short track from Liverpool 1, I thing anyone passing through the area should drop in and visit it.”
- Museum of Liverpool – Pier Head, Liverpool L3 1DG
Discover more about Liverpool#s history. “Never been a big lover of museums I have visited plenty but get bored with all the reading you have to do, Not here thou its very interactive you can sit on a bench and listen to a list of about 12 Liverpool songs whilst looking down the river mersey, there are plenty of buttons to press and you listen to the subject or there are narrators to take you through the subject. A great section on the overhead railway or the dockers umbrella.Anyway just go its fab.”
- Casbah Coffee Club – 8 Haymans Green, Liverpool L12 7JG
Here is one visitor’s response to their visit “We did the Casbah Coffee Club tour as part of our Fab Four Taxi Tour. We arrived to be greeted by Pete Best’s brother Rory, who was such a lovely man. We were a small group of six. He showed us round and told us loads of stories about the Beatles and Pete and their time together in the early days. He also gave some background stories about his family, especially his mother, Mona, who sounded like such a great character. This lady basically turned the basement of her house into a youth club for her sons and his friends, The Beatles! How fantastic is that! She had them all there painting and decorating the place and let them put on shows and bring their friends.”They happily continue by saying “Rory really brought the place to life with his stories and if your a Beatles fan, this tour is another must do when in Liverpool. Great way to spend a couple of hours.”
- Walker Art Gallery – William Brown Street, Liverpool L3 8EL
“Back in September 2017: there’s a special exhibition on Mucha, and the 3.00pm group taken round it by guide Simon had only five people in it. They were the lucky ones: Simon was knowledgeable, passionate, a good teacher who made us contribute observations, and all of them (well, us) came away surprised that Mucha’s poster work – for which he is forever associated – is the product of only the early part of his life. The later work, influenced by his sense of Slav nationalism, is on display, but I doubt any visitor who came to look without the likes of Simon to guide would have come away with the same depth of understanding.”
- Mendips – John Lennon Home – 251 Menlove Avenue, Liverpool L25 7SA
Just one person’s review of their experience “A beautiful home with a lovely letter written by a most cruelly misconstrued lady. Ms Ono bought Mendips and gave it to the National Trust because it was the home her husband loved so much and which she did not want to end up in the hands of a sick freak. It is beautifully furnished and decorated, and it gives you an idea of this middle-class childhood that shaped the sharp mind of “Imagine.” Do go and see Forthlin Road as well. These two homes will make you think and some aspects about the Beatles story really begin to make sense here.”
- The Beatles Story – The Beatles Story, Britannia Vaults, Albert Dock, Liverpool L3 4AD
It wouldn’t be right if you didn’t something to do with the Beatles! “This is a great way to learn more about the Beatles’ beginnings; how they got together, who helped them along the way, and how they made it big. It also did a good job of detailing the individual musicians after the band broke up. But I was a little disappointed that they crammed the main 5 or so years of fame all together into really just one or two rooms. I felt like more justice could have been done to the individual albums and/or phases. That said, it was an enjoyable couple of hours. Even our young children enjoyed it, without knowing much about the Beatles.”
