‘Architecture’ building bridges with China
No sooner have eight Superlambananas made Liverpool their permanent home than one of them is off on its travels as a ‘Scouse ambassador’ to China.
Last week the eight sculptures, commissioned by Liverpool City Council to celebrate the Go Superlambananas trail, were returned to the city as a permanent legacy of Capital of Culture year.
Now ‘Architecture’ SLB has left its site on The Strand to delight visitors to the Liverpool Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai for six months.
The sculpture, designed by Debbie Ryan, was chosen from the “eight for 08” because it best reflects the look of the city with its mosaic design depicting the Chinese arch, the Metropolitan cathedral, the Albert Dock and St George’s Hall amongst other city sights.
Artist Debbie Ryan said: “I’m thrilled my Superlambanana design was chosen for such an important event. It’s a fantastic opportunity for literally thousands of people to see it and hopefully with the other attractions in the pavilion inspire more overseas visitors to come to Liverpool to see what’s on offer here.”
Liverpool is the only city in the UK to have a dedicated presence at the World Expo in Shanghai with pavilion sited in the Urban Pest Practice Area.
The Liverpool Pavilion is to be a showcase for the dynamic creativity and enterprise which is embodied by the city and will also position Liverpool as the gateway to England’s North West, telling the story of the region’s diversity, scale and the exceptional quality of its culture and outstanding natural environments.
The Expo takes place every four years and is an opportunity for participants to showcase investment opportunities and cultural distinctiveness to an international audience.
Organisers of the Shanghai 2010 Expo estimate that 70 million people will visit the Expo during its six month run from May 1st to October 31st 2010.
During the six months 200 ceramic Superlambananas will be given away as competition prizes to visitors to the Liverpool pavilion.
‘Architecture’, itself, should arrive in time to be on display for the opening of the pavilion on May 1st and back in the Autumn to join the rest of the flock on a site near the new entrance of Lime Street station.
