Liverpool News New type of efficient electrical supply to be tried out in Liverpool

Liverpool has been chosen to try out the latest development in energy technology.

The city was picked to trial a SmartGrid.

It is hoped the technology will improve the reliability and quality of electricity supplies, as well as helping to increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

Approximately 1,200 homes in south Liverpool will be part of the scheme, which is expected to last two years.

A number of businesses and schools will also be involved.

The Mersey Partnership led the consortium which successfully bid for the trial, saying it will help create jobs.

Premises included in the scheme will be fitted with special meters which give a very detailed breakdown of how much energy is being used

Lorraine Rogers, chief executive of The Mersey Partnership, said: “The SmartGrid trial will be the catalyst for investment and job opportunities in the Liverpool region.

“Successful development will create demand for meter manufacture, installation engineers, data processing staff and energy advisors.

“Hosting the SmartGrid trial has the potential to boost innovation and accelerate the move towards a low-carbon economy.”

More details on the scheme, including how much it will cost and the exact geographical area, should be released soon.
