Africa Oye music festival comes to Sefton Park this weekend
Sefton Park will see the return of the annual Africa Oye festival this weekend.
Organisers are promising this year’s festival – the UK’s largest free celebration of African music and culture – will be bigger and better than ever.
Over the two days of the festival, there will be music from nations right across Africa, as well as music from the Caribbean such as salsa, soca and reggae.
There will also be more than 40 stalls at the Oye village, selling the best food, drink, arts and crafts and fashion from Africa and beyond.
The event attracted an audience of over 20,000 people in 2009, and even more are expected to attend this year.
Beginning in 1992 as a series of small gigs in the city centre, the event has gone from strength to strength, moving to its present Sefton Park home in 2002 to cope with demand.
Funded by Liverpool city council and the Arts Council of England, the festival – which aims to overturn negative representations of Africa and highlight its culture and music – has won a string of awards in the 19 years of its existence.
The festival is open from 12.30pm to 9.30pm on June 19 and 20. Admission is free.
