Wirral Waters plan revealed to create tree-lined boulevard

Plans to create tree-lined boulevards and parkland in and around the site of the multi-million pound Wirral Waters development were revealed last night.

The proposal to plant more than 20 miles of “Green Streets” and “Greenways” is expected to initially focus on areas surrounding Birkenhead’s East Float site, which has been granted planning permission, as well as around the planned International Trade Centre.

A key part of the plan is a so-called “City Boulevard” connecting Bidston Moss and the less well-off neighbourhoods of north Birkenhead to East Float, Birkenhead town centre and Hamilton Square.

It is hoped the boulevard will create a new public transport route and cycleways linking the national Millennium Way cycle route at Bidston Moss to developer Peel’s Wirral Waters and onto Liverpool.

The aim of the £1.4m project is to deliver an “early win” for the Wirral Waters scheme and improve the area’s environment.

A new report said the scheme is intended to change the view that the area is “characterised by large tracts of derelict and underused land, which acts to reinforce embedded perceptions of inner Wirral as a place not to invest”.

It will be completed in three phases between 2012 and 2015.

The report, called Setting The Scene For Wirral Waters, said this investment will build upon the Forestry Commission’s Newlands programme, which created the 68-hectare Bidston Moss Community Woodland.

It said the project should “drastically improve” the area’s image by revamping the approach to and arrival points of Wirral Waters’ first-phase development sites.

Officials hope it will build confidence, attract financial interest and investment, and encourage new employers and residents to locate and invest in inner Wirral.

In a report to Wirral Council’s cabinet, which meets tomorrow, the council’s interim director of corporate resources Kevin Adderley said the project will be delivered by Forestry Commission, Mersey Forest and Groundwork Merseyside.

He added: “It is intended that this will have a catalytic effect and bring forward private-sector interest and investment around Wirral Waters.”
