Voodou Training recruits record number of trainees through latest apprenticeship schemes
Liverpool’s leading independent hair salon chain Voodou Training has recruited a record number of new trainees in a bid to cut unemployment in the city.
Managing Director Rob Webb said that in the past eight weeks, the company has signed up 150 young people, between the ages of 16 to 24, who will now embark on a 12 month training scheme in hairdressing and barbering. At the end of the course, which is worth up to the value of £3,000, all candidates will end up with a NVQ level 2 or 3.
He said: “It’s fantastic that we have been able to help so many of the city’s young people. Initially, our target was to recruit 100, but the interest that we received was overwhelming and as a result, we have expanded our training arm more than ever before.
“We’ve got a variety of apprentices on board from young mums to teenagers who have just left school and we believed it was vital to offer them the chance to embark on a number of full or part time training schemes.”
Since the coalition government came to power in May 2010, it has invested heavily in apprenticeships, upping the annual spend of £1.3bn to more than £1.4bn for the next financial year – enough to train 360,000 apprentices.
Rob said: “We recognised that it was hard to get into employment today and thanks to these investments, we have been able to make a real difference when it comes to unemployment figures in Liverpool and encouraging young people to follow their career aspirations.”
Earlier this month, Voodou Training was announced as one of three local companies nominated in The Business Enterprise Award category for the 2012 Juice FM Style Awards, which are voted for by the public.
“We’ve had a great year so far, what with new apprentices, a new training manager and now this nomination”, said Rob, “We really can’t wait to see what the next 12 months will bring.”
