Teaching Liverpool to Cook!
Can Cook is causing a stir in the kitchen with their latest campaign; giving Liverpool some much needed TLC. The campaign launched on Thursday the 2nd February, and was attended by many key delegates from across Liverpool.
Councillor Gary Miller started proceedings before Jane Ritchie-Smyth of the 5by25 charity took to the podium. Robbie Davison of Can Cook then introduced the campaign and the aims and vision behind it. Can Cook will have 100 days to raise £50,000 and are urging people and businesses alike to join the cookery revolution.
Can Cook’s Teaching Liverpool to Cook campaign looks to raise the money in order to teach thousands of families across the city how to cook healthy, affordable, home-cooked meals.
Statistics show that 50% of adults do not cook at home. Even more worryingly is that 90% of young people do not know how to cook a simple meal, neglecting the kitchen due to a lack of basic skills and understanding. With their new campaign, Can Cook is striving to tackle these figures head on, and teach Liverpool how to cook.
The 100 day campaign will invite up to 500 companies to invest £100 each. This investment works in two ways; Can Cook will invite one employee from each donating company to attend the cookery training; promoting health and wellbeing in the workplace. Can Cook will then use the balance to teach young people to cook in a school or community setting. The target is to teach 2000 people of all ages across Liverpool to cook three meals from scratch – the results of which will then feed directly into the national 5by25 campaign organised by EBLEX (English Beef and Lamb Executive)
Can Cook is calling out for companies, organisations and individuals across the city to join this Cookery Revolution. The money raised will provide thousands of people across the city with the skills they need to live healthier and happier lives, whilst helping to develop the next generation of master chefs.
Robbie Davison, Director of Can Cook, said: “The lack of food and cookery knowledge amongst people, young and older, has reached epidemic proportions - with dire effects on health. Teaching Liverpool to Cook will change that - we will create a food and cookery revolution and leave a legacy of people who are healthy, happy and can create a fantastic plate of food!”
Councillor Gary Millar said: “Together with the Liverpool Council we add our support to this incredible campaign. It’s about bringing together the businesses of Liverpool in urging them to help this cause. Can Cook launched this initiative with the people of Liverpool in mind and it is a campaign, which will do good for those who need it most; teaching them how to cook healthy, wallet friendly meals. I am proud to have this fantastic initiative in the city, doing social good and educating our future generation’s age old lessons that have been lost in recent years.”
5by25 are the latest to show their support to Can Cook’s Teaching Liverpool Cook campaign. 5by25 aims to teach young people to cook at least five scratch dishes by the age of 25.
Jane Ritchie-Smith, 5by25 Campaign, said: “5by25 are delighted to be supporting Can Cook’s Teaching Liverpool to Cook campaign. We are determined to equip more young people with the necessary skills to prepare and cook five meals using fresh ingredients by the age of 25. We want to give them the choice to cook. Teaching Liverpool to Cook is a great step in the right direction to achieving this. 5by25 look forward to sharing in Liverpool’s results and experiences as we develop our campaign to ensure that core cooking skills are not forgotten in Liverpool, and across the country.”
