Stars of Brouhaha entertain shoppers as festival fever gets underway
Brouhaha festival INTERNATIONAL artists starring in the city’s Brouhaha street festival brought Liverpool city centre to life yesterday.
Groups from across the globe wowed shoppers with street theatre, dance, music and a colourful carnival parade.
A special one-off musical performance, The Big Bang, featuring drummers from UK, Martinique, Portugal and Senegal, rounded off the day’s celebrations.
The annual street festival culminates tomorrow with a carnival procession to Princes Park, where an estimated 40,000 people will party until 7pm.
Twenty-six groups from 18 countries around the globe and 40 community groups from Liverpool are taking part in Brouhaha.
Giles Agis, executive director of the festival said: "Yesterday was a great showcase of what's to come on Saturday and I’m delighted and very appreciative of the support City Central BID (Business Improvement District) and Liverpool One have repeatedly shown.”
Saturday’s Liverpool International Carnival starts from 11.30am at Mulberry Street, arriving at Princes Park by 1pm.
Brouhaha events have taken place across Merseyside this week.
Dutch troupe Got Skills, from Rotterdam, entertained pupils at Holy Family Catholic Primary, in Toxteth, with an exhibition of dance influenced by hip-hop and street culture.
Deputy head teacher Joan Jenkins said the school was thrilled at the visit.
She said: “It was perfect timing really.
“We’ve been hosting Multicultural Arts Week this week and Got Skills’ visit was a great way to complete what has been a celebration of the diversity of different cultures.
“Our pupils were so excited to meet the group and have learnt so much generally this week in exploring different cultures from around the world.”
Other events included an evening of traditional cultural dance at the Unity Theatre.
