Seaforth docks £500m super port plans revealed in Mersey Ports Master Plan
Further details about Peel’s plans for a huge redevelopment of the Port of Liverpool at Seaforth have been revealed.
A report to Sefton Council said around £500m could potentially be invested in the site, making the Mersey docks the “super port” of the North.
The regeneration of the port will be able to assist in the regeneration in the “new Seaforth” along with the surrounding areas which suffer major deprivation, it is hoped. Peel Ports, owner of the docks, hopes as many as 7,500 jobs could be created – some of them dockers’ positions.
The Mersey Ports Master Plan’s 20-year strategy for growth includes:
A planned Seaforth River Terminal and deepwater container port expansion planned for 2014;
The erection of a biomass power plant at the Hornby/Langton Docks;
Re-use an area at Canada Dock for open storage or warehousing;
The proposed use of the Seaforth nature reserve for port-related purposes;
The possible acquisition of land on the Regent Road/Derby Road corridor.
The potential increase in jobs was welcomed by Sefton Council leader Peter Dowd, but he said that good news must be “balanced” against proposals to use the nature reserve for port-related activities.
He added: “We welcome the economic development opportunities that the strategy brings, but these economic activities always have to be balanced against the quality of life in the local community – such as environmental issues to do with the nature reserve and traffic issues as a result of the development. Any plan will have to take these factors into account.” The Sefton Council report highlights that the nature reserve could be adequately replaced by providing compensatory habitat elsewhere.
Peel Ports Mersey managing director Gary Hodgson said: “To develop as a port and bring thousands more jobs to Liverpool and the North West, we need to encourage more business to our facilities.
“This is really about increased employment and the economic development of our region.”
A three-month consultation runs until Sept 5.
