North West LEPs offered start-up cash
Local enterprise partnerships (LEPs) in the North West will have the chance of securing cash from a new £5m start-up fund that has been launched by the government.
The fund is described as a "one-off pot of money to fund such things as office equipment and training" to help LEPs get established. It is one of a series of proposals being put forward by business minister Mark Prisk to kick-start the new organisations.
A UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) spokesman said: "Partnerships will be expected to demonstrate as part of their bid how they will become self-sustaining in the future."
BIS has also set up an "online toolbox" which provides information on economic development activity across government departments and ideas for partnership or government working. LEPs will be able to access information through the new BIS Local network.
Partnerships have also been allocated money from the £1m Capacity Fund, the government said, to "help increase their understanding of the barriers to growth facing local businesses".
Prisk added: "Today we are moving up a gear in promoting local growth. Over the past ten months, business and civic leaders have risen to the challenge and we now have 33 partnerships in place covering 92 per cent of all businesses in England.
"The package of support opportunities I’ve announced today will help partnerships to translate their ideas and ambition into real action to help businesses in their areas and to unlock growth."
