New army of volunteers on hand to welcome million of tourists to Liverpool

A group of city residents will be giving up their time to welcome millions of tourists to Liverpool.

A total of 20 people have now volunteered to meet and greet holidaymakers as they arrive in the city, giving information and advice on all its top tourist attractions and how to reach them.

The scheme, originally launched in 2010, was one of the key reasons why Liverpool won “Best UK City” in a poll of travel industry professionals from around the country in September.

Council culture and leisure cabinet member, Cllr Wendy Simon, said the city would now be offering an even warmer welcome, thanks to the new wave of volunteers.

Yesterday, the new intake assembled for the first time at the Albert Dock.

Cllr Simon said: “We knew that giving tourists personal attention would make the city stand out from the competition.

“The Albert Dock attracts more than 4m visitors every year, and it’s wonderful this new batch of ambassadors will be on hand to help passengers make the most out of their time here.”

The Albert Dock Estate’s Peter Cronin added: “We are delighted to be in a position to move this forward again, and we have created a package of group offers and coach driver benefits with our tenants to extend a warm Liverpool welcome.”
