Momentum builds ahead of BID deadline
Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and Barclays Corporate in Merseyside are the latest names to throw their weight behind the campaign to create a Business Improvement District (BID) in Liverpool city centre.
Landlords and tenants with a rateable value exceeding £10,000 have been balloted on the BID proposal, which seeks to raise more than £600,000 per year for enhanced marketing, maintenance and physical improvements.
Liverpool Chamber's chief executive Jack Stopforth said: "We’ve seen tremendous improvement in the fabric of the city centre in recent years largely due to the additional services and raised profile achieved by the Liverpool Commercial Business District Partnership (CDP).
"The BID provides the opportunity to bring additional improvements such as events and marketing to improved street cleaning and environmental improvements. The additional revenue that raised by the proposal will bring an additional investment of £2.7m into the city’s central business area."
The proposed new BID area would be bounded by Leeds Street in the north and James Street in the south and run from west to east from The Strand to Pall Mall, mirroring the boundaries currently controlled by the existing Liverpool CDP.
A majority 'yes' vote is required to bring a BID into force. The ballot opened on 29 April and will close on 27 May, with a final decision expected three days later.
Rikki Griffiths, corporate director for Barclays Corporate in Merseyside, added: "From its purely voluntary base, the commercial district partnership has an outstanding record of delivering significant and meaningful enhancements.
"For this renaissance to continue in the face of sweeping public sector austerity, the private sector must step up to the plate and back its own ambitions for the area. Those volunteer contributors can no longer carry the can, and rightly so.
"Investment on this scale could deliver a major boost to the commercial district and such an opportunity should not be overlooked. The benefits for all landlords and tenants have been clearly defined by the partnership and I have no doubt that BID status will be good for business."
