Mersey pirate muster sees New Brighton's Fort Perch Rock attacked!
Thousands enjoyed a pirate battle of epic proportions when Mersey Pirate Muster took over New Brighton this weekend.
Fort Perch Rock shook to the sound of muskets and cannons as a band of bloodthirsty cut-throats met there for the family-friendly event yesterday.
More than 15,000 visitors enjoyed the swashbuckling spectacular, which began with a pirate parade led by the Muster Marauders Band from Vale Park to Fort Perch Rock.
The maritime mayhem continued with a treasure hunt leading to hidden bounty along the waterfront.
Treasure seekers were helped along by the mysterious Black Rock mermaid, played by actress Suzanne Collins, who offered handy tips on their search for the mysterious swag.
Then it was all guns blazing as warring pirates opened fire on their rivals in an explosive display launched by mariner Lesley Butler, who fired the first shot.
Hundreds of pirates from all over the UK, including the legendary Hopi Hopwood, then became entwined in a sword fight battling “to the death”.
The third Pirate Muster, organised by seafarer Cathy “Tugboat Cathy” Roberts, crossed the River Mersey for the first to its new home in New Brighton this year.
Cathy said: “Our first year at Fort Perch Rock has been a great success.
“The many pirate legends surrounding the Wallasey coast make it the perfect location.
“It is steeped in stories of pirates, privateers and smuggling.
“Arguably one of England’s most successful privateers and adventurers, Fortunatus Wright, lived in Wallasey.”
She added: “Despite the poor weather, around 15,000 people turned out. Everyone really got into the spirit and it was great to see so many dress up.
“Entire families came dressed up as pirates. Some even dressed up their pets.
“There was a lovely atmosphere and everyone seemed to a great time.
“I must thank all the local businesses for their support, and Stan Boardman for his help. Also a huge thanks to all those who braved the weather and helped make it a fantastic event.”
