Liverpool’s Seel Street named as UK’s fourth hippest street
A Liverpool city centre road has fought off rivals from across the country to be named as the fourth “hippest” street in the UK.
Seel Street, in the trendy Ropeworks area of the city, has been commended for its array of bars, clubs and its unique artistic style. It was partly regenerated in 2007.
The narrow thoroughfare beat entries from across the country, including streets in Manchester, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London.
The winner was South Shore Road, in Gateshead, but controversially the attraction which won it the accolade has been revealed to be situated in a neighbouring street, while South Shore Road itself is home to grassland and scrapyards.
The Google Street Awards nominees were decided by an expert panel.
In 2010, Liverpool’s Mathew Street was named as the fourth best in the UK for fashion.
Seel Street is home to many popular bars and restaurants, including Alma de Cuba, created in the former St Peter’s Catholic Church, which closed in 1978.
Other Seel Street nighttime venues include The Masque, Heebie Jeebies and The Peacock.
Andy Stoddart, a manager at The Peacock, said the accolade of hippest street was “well-deserved.”
He added: “This area has really paved the way for venues in Liverpool and there is a really great atmosphere in Seel Street.
“The best thing is that there are so many bars so close to each other – it is like you can have three different nights out on one street.”
Seel Street was once home to the UK’s first purpose-built synagogue which opened in 1808.
It has also attracted the attention of burgeoning companies in the UK, such as Base2stay, which opened its first hotel outside London there.
Robert Nadler, chief executive of the 106-bedroom venue, which was unveiled last year, said: “When base2stay chose Liverpool, we were immediately drawn to the Ropewalks.
“Seel Street has cool clubs, restaurants, art and, of course, the coolest hotel in the city!
“I am just astonished it only made it to number four in the rankings.
“We strongly believe the entire Ropewalks area can become one of the hippest districts in Europe, never mind Britain, with a little more investment and creative energy.”
