Liverpool school competes in international film competition
A short film on hate crime, TRADING PLACES, made by pupils from Archbishop Beck Secondary School in Fazakerly, in partnership with Clapperboard UK and Comic Relief, has been selected for competition, from over 2,000 international short films, at the forthcoming Up-and-Coming Film Festival in Hannover, Germany.
A group of 12 young people aged 12-14 made the film earlier this year. They were involved in every role from script development to post-production. Actor Jack McMullen who played Finn from Waterloo Road and actor Jessica Forrest (Leanne) Hollyoaks participated in an acting workshop to help the students with their acting roles. Local writer, Michelle Langan and Handstand Productions assisted with the script development and production process. The short film, TRADING PLACES if about a friendship that is challenged when a young girl finds herself at the hands of a bunch of cyber-bullies, a topical issue in young people’s lives of today.
Paul Dickinson, Head teacher from Archbishop Beck said "We are delighted that our Clapperboard film has been selected by the Up and Coming International Film Festival in Hannover, Germany. Working with Clapperboard is always an amazing experience for our students. They were incredibly honoured to have two influential actors work alongside them for the afternoon in preparation for their film making and a great team of creative professionals. The students found both Jack and Jessica excellent ambassadors for Clapperboard.
Maureen Sinclair, Clapperboard Director said, “Each year we distribute all our short films regionally, nationally and internationally. I’m extremely proud of the young film-makers and all our supporters and funders as the project wouldn’t exist without them. This year’s jury included, acclaimed writers Frank Cottrell Boyce and Paul Abbott, respectively and actors, Tina Malone (Shameless) and Andrew Lancel (The Bill, Coronation Street). It’s really exciting that an international film festival will be exhibiting and promoting young talent from Merseyside. The film along with our other shorts can be seen on www.clapperboarduk.com. We have just began making our year 2011-12 shorts and continue in our search for new supporters and funders for our charitable project which gives young people a voice.
