Liverpool creative marketing sector in good shape, says Liverpool Vision Director

Liverpool's creative and digital marketing sector remains in good shape, despite the demise of Finch, according to Liverpool Vision’s digital industry director.

Earlier this week, LDP Business revealed that Finch – the company behind Liverpool’s iconic 08 Capital of Culture brand – had been placed into voluntary liquidation by its directors.

Director and founder Tim Crutchley blamed the tough economic climate for the decision.

He said the company had been unable to secure retained contracts and was relying on single project deals.

“The model we had wasn’t working any more,” he added.

Finch’s collapse raised the question of whether this was a bad sign for the city’s creative marketing sector as a whole.

But Steve Smith, digital industry director at regeneration body Liverpool Vision, claims this is not the case.

He said: “Many of the younger firms coming through understand that they can no longer rely on retainer contracts.

“They recognise that doing work on a project-by-project basis is now the norm, and perhaps Finch didn’t adapt to this quickly enough.

“If you look at the companies doing really well – the likes of Mando and Rippleffect – you will see the key is good account management.

“Not only will they make sure they do a good job on the contract, they will be going to the client suggesting new ideas for future work.

“Finch went from having more than 20 staff to just eight.

“You have to ask what were they doing during that period of decline to change?”
