Liverpool creative links with Memphis may strengthen creative and digital clusters

Plans to twin Liverpool and Memphis as Rock ‘n’ Soul Mates could build links between the cities’ creative and digital clusters.

The initiative, launched by regeneration agency Liverpool Vision and announced last month, aims to build on the musical connections between the cities which were home to The Beatles and Elvis Presley.

Vision hopes to build business connections between the two cities. It has already suggested that each city could host a showcase of the other’s businesses.

Now Vision chief executive Max Steinberg says he hopes to help build links between the creative and digital sectors in Merseyside and Tennessee.

He said: “There’s a lot of work taking shape in terms of Liverpool becoming a creative and digital hub. Kevin McManus, of support agency ACME, is working on the musical links between Memphis and Liverpool. But there are other links that could be created in terms of creative and digital.

“We’ve been doing a lot of work with digital businesses in Finland. There have been some Finnish companies opening in Liverpool. I think that is an area where we could see opportunities for meaningful dialogue with Memphis.

“What we wanted to test was did they see this as a musical initiative, or as the start of something that went beyond that into being a business exchange? The response was an unequivocal ‘yes’ to the latter.

“It’s at an early stage. But I’m very hopeful we will see opportunities develop for businesses to get together and showcase what they have available. We will look for meaningful ways in which we can complement each other.”

As the Daily Post reported last month, several cultural organisations in both cities have already agreed to work together.

Elvis’s home, Graceland, will twin with The Beatles Story, while the new Museum of Liverpool will twin with the Stax Museum of American Soul.
