Liverpool bidding to host world’s first ‘green’ bank

Liverpool has gone into battle with 20 other towns and cities – including two nearby rivals – for the lucrative right to host the world’s first “green” bank.

The city council has told the Government it has a compelling case for being home to the pioneering £3bn Green Investment Bank when a decision is made next year.

The bank – a flagship coalition policy, designed to fund major renewable energy projects – will only deliver a relatively small number of jobs, predicted to be “not much above 50 during this parliament”.

But the real prize is the prestige that hosting the bank would bring, acting as a powerful magnet to attract low-carbon businesses.

The full list of towns and cities which have expressed an intention to lodge bids already has 21 names, including Leeds, Manchester, Bristol and Edinburgh. They include Warrington, which will argue it is a “prime location” with excellent transport links and “a town which consistently out-performs most of the rest of the UK in terms of economic indicators”.

The third possible location in the North West is Chester, although mystery surrounds who has expressed an interest on behalf of the city.

Cheshire West and Chester Council said it had not formally bid to the Department for Business (BIS), which said contact could also come from individuals, MPs or local enterprise partnerships (LEPs).
