Internships add to China/UK business links
Increasing business links between the UK and China are creating opportunities for a new generation of Merseysiders, particularly those affected by rising university fees.
Internships offer UK participants work placements in the world’s fastest-growing economy, and the offer of full time jobs.
Conversely, UK and Merseyside companies can benefit by offering internships to high-calibre Chinese students eager for exposure to Western methods in their bid to become China’s business leaders of tomorrow.
CRCC Asia is one of the leading providers of internships in China, and revealed that 12% of its applicants originate from Merseyside.
Liverpool John Moores University graduate Charlotte Till is one of CRCC Asia’s most recent “alumni” after spending two months in Beijing last year with Chinese travel company CYTS, before returning to secure a job as a marketing executive in London.
She said: “I not only learned more about marketing and the travel industry, but also about Chinese business culture and business etiquette.
“I definitely feel my experience in China helped me in my career by giving me an international edge and also a deeper work experience.
“Working in China is all the interviewers wanted to talk to me about, as it made me different from other candidates.”
CRCC Asia said that this summer more than 30% of its interns were offered full-time contracts at the companies which provided their internships. Daniel Nivern, CRCC Asia director, said: “The benefit for Chinese companies is the Western knowledge and practices that foreign graduates can bring to the table.”
Firms in Liverpool – which is twinned with Shanghai – can establish valuable business links with China through the Sino-UK Internship Programme which has been created by BII China, in partnership with Beijing Compounded World Education Technology, the professional body for education and training in China.
Sino-UK aims to secure 2,000 positions for Chinese interns in its first year, and is in the process of building links with UK companies and universities.
