Google have landed

Google arrived in Liverpool yesterday and they arrived with a bang!
Everyone probably knows that we’ve been working with Google over the last months in advance of them coming to the city for their campaign aimed at getting Liverpool businesses online. They are here for three months but last night was the launch . And on this evidence Google definitely know how to do launches!
It took place in the stunning new venue Camp and Furnace on Greenland St. The team managing it have done a brilliant job and it worked perfectly for this event.
The whole night was held together by Vision’s Chief Executive, Max Steinberg, but Max was almost upstaged (which doesn’t happen very often) by the opening Google salvo. The room went quiet, the lights dimmed and we all waited for someone important to welcome us to the evening. What we got instead was some crashing music and a bunch of very athletic dancers who got into a series of increasingly athletic and painful looking poses on the pillars of the building with only some ribbons stopping them crashing to the ground. I almost chocked on my smartphone.
Max then brought people back to the real reason we were all there. He stressed the absolute importance of Liverpool businesses getting online and improving their online performance if they are going to grow. This was a message echoed by Cllr Gary Millar, something of an IT/gadget expert in his own right (and see how I cleverly avoided using the word geek there).
The main attraction (sorry Max) was Google UK’s Head Matt Brittin who gave a very slick and fascinating presentation which highlighted the benefits of some Google tools but largely focused on the message that online is king and businesses need to maximise their online performance if they want to succeed.
The formal part of the evening ended with a call to businesses to sign up to the Google Juice bar where you can have a 40 minute one to one advice session with a Google expert. If you haven’t got a website they can set you up. If you already have a web presence then they can give you tips on how to improve it. It is a brilliant offer so take them up on it.
Then the very nice Google people gave us some nice nibbles and some very nice cocktails. I love Google. And some serious networking was taking place. I introduced Paul Kinlan, Google’s man in Liverpool for the next few months, to a couple of people from Liverpool’s digital sector and they were soon happily talking away about analytics and getting very excited. Paul is going to be putting together a series of events for the digital media sector so look out for those.
