Everyman theatre construction work to begin after old building is knocked down
Demolitiom of the old Everyman theatre was completed yesterday, with construction of the new building to begin almost immediately.
Liverpool-based demolition experts Sloyan Doyle, who spent 20 weeks painstakingly “deconstructing” the theatre, officially handed over the Hope Street site to builders Gilbert-Ash yesterday.
The new £28m Everyman and Everyman Bistro are due to open their doors in late 2013.
The building will house a 400-seater theatre, an expanded backstage, rehearsal space, a dedicated space for the Everyman Youth Theatre and community groups, production workshops, and front-of-house, catering and bar facilities including a recreation of the Bistro, and a pavement cafe.
Tony Sloyan, of Sloyan Doyle, explained how the old building had been carefully taken down brick by brick, with as many as possible saved for re-use.
He said: “We did a lot of preparation work and we salvaged as much as we could to meet the client’s requirements.”
Gilbert-Ash has previously worked on projects including Belfast’s new Lyric Theatre and the Grand Opera House, and the Everyman will be constructed by the same team. Other recent landmark projects include St Andrews University library and a new state-of-the-art archive facility for the British Film Institute.
The firm will start working up from the basement, and anyone interested can follow progress on a webcam link from the Everyman’s website, www.everymanplayhouse.com
Artistic director Gemma Bodinetz said: “This is the first time we’ve been on site since it came down. It’s really interesting to see the scale of it, and, knowing the plans as we do, we can begin to see how much room we will have and how things like the bistro and cafe bar and box office will look.”
Executive director Deborah Aydon added: “We’re very grateful to Sloyan Doyle for their work on the deconstruction, which was extremely well-run and, above all, sensitively handled.
"As the exciting construction phase begins, we’re thrilled to be working with Gilbert-Ash.”
