Didi Man signs for Liverpool in London
Liverpool FC Legend Dietmar ‘Didi’ Hamann visited the Liverpool in London offices last week to make a promotional video for his autobiography, ‘The Didi Man’.
The former German international midfielder who scored the last ever competitive goal at the old Wembley Stadium in 2000 in World Cup qualifier against England also played for Bayern Munich, Newcastle United, Manchester City and Milton Keynes Dons.
His most famous game in the red shirt of Liverpool was on 25 May 2005 in the Champions League final against AC Milan in Turkey.
Although he was suffering a broken toe during the final, Hamann's substitution for Steve Finnan at half time was the catalyst for Liverpool's historic fightback.
The team rallied after being 3–0 down to bring the game back to 3–3 and finally won in the penalty shootout; Hamann also showed a great amount of composure and bravery, as he took and converted the first LFC penalty with his broken foot.
In all Hamann played in 191 league games and scored eight goals for Liverpool and was also part of the team that won the cup treble in the 2000–01season.
Hamann was also one of the key players in Germany's surprising run to the 2002 FIFA World Cup Final becoming the first Liverpool player since Roger Hunt in 1966 to play in the world’s most important match.
He said of his visit to the city’s embassy: “Despite the number of clubs I have played for, wherever I go I am remembered for being part of the Liverpool side that won, so dramatically, the Champions League in 2005, quite simply one of the highlights of my career.
“It shows to me just how well the name ‘Liverpool’ is known across the world and I’ve learned it’s not just for football and sport, but for culture, for innovation, for enterprise and for business too.
“For Liverpool to have these wonderful offices in London can only help the city and those organisations backing it. It’s helping me promote book and I am very grateful for that.”
Chris Heyes, head of Liverpool in London, said: “We have welcomed many important figures to our offices in London, but Didi Hamann is probably the most famous and for a lot of people the most significant.
“It was great to show him round and tell him what we are doing here and now he is even more equipped to spread the word as one of our ambassadors.”
