Delefonseca to mark 5th birthday with a pop up city centre garden party

Renowned delicatessen and neighbourhood restaurant Delifonseca is urging city centre residents to come out in force this weekend to celebrate their fifth birthday and to support ‘Liverpool’s gay village’.

Kicking off on Sunday, June 12 from midday (and also on Monday, June 13) at its original and spiritual home on Stanley Street, guests will be able to spend the afternoon chilling in a quirky pop-up city centre garden, which will be filled with colourful deck chairs, barbeques and entertainment areas. Over the course of two days, there will be live music, games, food stalls and an alfresco licensed bar as well as the chance to put your cake-making skills to the test against fellow neighbours to be crowned the 2011 Delifonseca Honorary Cake Maker.

The event comes days after calls for official support for Stanley Street to be recognised as Liverpool’s gay village.

Owner Candice Fonseca said: “We’ve had a great five years in the city, what with opening two delis and restaurants, and we wanted to celebrate by putting on a series of events that support the local community. The team and I really wanted to do something a bit different in Stanley Street so that’s why we decided to transform the street and create the perfect party atmosphere.

“People will also be able to have a mooch around our store, which is currently undergoing a birthday revamp, so amongst the fresh paint they’ll be able to see how our neighbourhood deli has been transformed over the years. As part of the revamp, we’re going to be offering a take-out deli ready meal range to ensure our customers suppers will never need to be dull again!”

Mike Cockburn, City Centre Manager for Liverpool City Council, added: ‘We are very pleased to support the event to mark Delifonseca’s 5th birthday as it has become a very popular venue and vital to mixed economy within Stanley Street.

“We have recently completed a major consultation exercise to determine the future direction for Stanley Street and are about the announce plans the new ‘Stanley Street Quarter’ coming from the exercise. Stakeholders from Stanley Street want to see more events and animation taking place in the street to broaden appeal and promote the area particularly to families and tourists. Delifonseca’s event will hopefully mark the start of many more events and activity in Stanley Street.”

Candice Fonseca added: “We whole heartedly support these calls and that’s why we hope this event brings all of the local residents together.

“Moving forward, we also plan to reinforce that message by introducing a Residents Club on the back of the birthday events. We think it’s both essential and important to give residents the chance to interact on a regular basis to enjoy a glass of wine, eat good food and chat about their interests.”
