Bold Street businesses prepare for weekend festival

Organisers and traders are preparing for this weekend’s Bold Street festival.

The annual event, now in its fourth year, promises to be even bigger and better than before, with a packed programme of events over two full days.

The fun begins tonight, when a 3-D work of pavement art, featuring The Beatles, is to be unveiled on Church Street.

Members of the public have been able to watch the artwork take shape, talk to the artists and take pictures.

The finished product, entitled XXL Liverpool, will be two completely different works – one representing the birth of The Beatles and the other a 180 degree view showing their career. It has been created by the world of pavement art’s own Fab Four – Leon Keer, Ruben Poncia, Remko Van Schaik and Peter Westerink, a team of Guinness world record-breaking artists from Planet Street Painting, in Utrecht, Holland.

Tomorrow there will be live art busking in Ropewalks Square, an art market, upstairs at Leaf and a craft fair at Link19 (next to Resurrection).

Sunday sees the James Carling International Pavement Art Competition, in Ropewalks Square, the Black-E’s co-operative games and Tai Chi sessions in Lyceum Place, music on Heathfield Street, a poetry stage next to Tesco, and strolls with historian Terry Allen.

The festival, which will take place between 10am and 6pm and is free to attend, is being held with the help of Liverpool City Central BID.

Ged Gibbons, Chief Executive of City Central BID, said: “The Bold Street Festival is a very special event and to have it over two days will simply double the fun for everyone. Its programme perfectly captures the street’s Bohemian spirit and has a great European vibe.”

Hair salon Voodou will be entertaining the crowds with their very own seaside cut-out board, decorated in the style of an old-fashioned hairdressers, complete with Velcro rollers.

Rob Webb, managing director of Voodou, said: “The Bold Street Festival promises to be a great day out for all of the family, and it’s great that the organising committee have managed to make it a two-day event.

“It gives businesses like us an opportunity to showcase our talents to the Liverpool public and highlight what a modern and diverse offering Bold Street has.”

Mandy Vere, of News from Nowhere Bookshop, added: “We’re delighted to be part of the festival. It's a chance for the eclectic, creative and vibrant shops and cafes to really put Bold Street on the map.”
