Be ‘Bold’ and ‘Seel’ the awards for Liverpool
Two Liverpool streets are up for major national awards - but it will be the public who decides.
Google Maps and Street View have nominated Liverpool’s Seel Street and Bold Street for their 2011 Best Street Awards.
Seel Street has been nominated for ‘Hippest Street’ in the UK and Bold Street has been nominated for ‘Best Shopping Street’.
The Google Street View Awards are a celebration of Britain’s best streets, to be voted for in a nationwide poll.
Seel Street, in the heart of Liverpool’s RopeWalks quarter, is well known for its mix of creative and independent businesses.
These include a recording company, a fine art gallery, graphic designers, charities, dress designers, music teachers, model makers, antique dealers, as well the Liverpool Academy of Arts, the Liverpool Actors Studio, Alma De Cuba, Peacocks, Heebie Jeebies, Lago, The Blue Angel ,The Zanzibar and The Masque Theatre. The street is also in between FACT and Parr Street Studios.
Robert Nadler, the chief executive of Base2Stay, a boutique hotel on Seel Street opened last year in a building dating back to the 1850s said: “It’s pretty amazing that two RopeWalks streets are nominated out of the whole of the UK, so we should make a song and dance about this, and urge everyone to vote.
“I love the RopeWalks area, it has a real community feel. It has a special vibrancy that comes from its mix of historic buildings and crafts with cutting edge businesses and trendy bars and cafes. There is no doubt that it’s an area that is becoming more attractive to businesses, visitors and investors, like myself.
“It’s appropriate too that Seel Street is nominated for Hippest Street because of the range of activities and businesses and the kind of people you see along it. It really has an arty, Bohemian edgy atmosphere and I’m delighted that it has been recognised.”
Bold Street is well known as a street brimming with independent shops, boutiques, grocers, restaurants and cafes.
Sam Tawil, owner/proprietor of Bold Street Coffee, added: “This is an excellent shopping street and the reason I opened my business here a year ago. It always feels like a proper shopping street should.
“Not only is there a good mix from book and art shops to cafes and as a consequence it feels different from elsewhere in the city centre. In turn Bold Street attracts a good mix of people, including many creative people and students who are looking for a different kind of shopping experience and they can get it in Bold Street, because it doesn’t look and feel like any other city centre shopping street.”
Jenny Douglas, Liverpool Vision’s Head of City Centre, said: “These nominations for the RopeWalks area are totally justified. It is a unique area of the city centre, and much of the street pattern and built fabric is the same today as it was 200 years ago.
“Since the early 1990s, RopeWalks has developed as a centre for the design and creative industries, including theatres and trendy bars. Importantly the business community is determined to keep up the regeneration momentum of recent times and is now actively working together to promote the area to visitors and shoppers as an independent quarter.”
The shortlist for the Street View Best Streets Award was compiled by a panel of 15 experts from the worlds of travel, lifestyle and popular culture including Bill Prince, Deputy editor of GQ Magazine, Sarah Beeny, Channel 4’s ‘Property Ladder’ TV presenter and David Else, lead author of The Lonely Planet Guide to Great Britain.
For 2011’s awards, there are three categories open to the public vote; including Britain’s Most Romantic Street, with 21 nominations in each category. One vote per category, but you a vote can be changed at any time.
Voting is now open and closes on Sunday 22nd May. The winners will be announced in June.
