BBC showcase shines light on Liverpool
Leading broadcasters from around the world will descend on Liverpool next month for the biggest television showcase of its kind.
The BBC’s commercial arm, BBC Worldwide, will hold its annual showcase at the BT Convention Centre from February 26 to February 29.
The event gives the BBC the chance to promote its programming to hundreds of global TV buyers.
It has helped the corporation sell programmes such as Frozen Planet and formats such as Top Gear and Strictly Come Dancing – also known as Dancing with the Stars – to broadcasters around the world. The Corporation says BBCWorldwide Showcase, which it calls “a cornerstone event for British television”, is the largest event of its kind in the world hosted by a single distributor. It accounts for some 20% of BBC Worldwide’s annual programme sales.
The event will include a dedicated digital day for the first time. Bob Prattey, chief executive of the venues’ parent company ACC Liverpool, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming the showcase when this prestigious event arrives in Liverpool next month.
“It is a fantastic opportunity to showcase to delegates from all over Europe not only what ACC Liverpool has to offer but also our city.
“We are proud that the team at BBC Worldwide has chosen to come to Liverpool for the first time in its 36-year history, citing the versatility and scale of our venue, as well as the experience of our events team and our destination as some of the reasons for coming here.
“The number of registered delegates is already very encouraging and the event will contribute further economic benefits to the city. ”
Keynote speakers already confirmed for the showcase’s digital day include Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at video streaming service Netflix.
Netflix streams thousands of films and TV shows to 20m subscribers in 47 countries around the world. It will launch in the UK later this year.
Delegates will also be addressed by Somrat Niyogi, co-founder of “social TV” internet start-up Miso. His site allows people to share their opinions on the programmes they are watching.
Steve Macallister, president and managing director for sales and distribution at BBC Worldwide, said: “Showcase guests this year are in for an incredibly rich experience – a new host city, hundreds of hours of the world’s finest new television, an abundance of on and off-screen talent plus a whole day totally dedicated to digital exploration.
“Digital growth is a huge focus for BBC Worldwide and we’ve made great strides in the past year.
“I’m thrilled that we’re able to bring some of the leading minds in this space to join us in Liverpool to share and debate their insights with an international delegation.”
