South Docks Waterspace update

South Docks Waterspace update

The waterspace in the Liverpool South Docks is an underused asset that represents a major opportunity to contribute to the continued development of the city centre waterfront as a visitor destination of international standing.

With this in mind, dock water owner British Waterways has commissioned award winning practice Baca Architects to prepare a development strategy. The strategy will:

• Recommend options to unlock the full potential of the waterspace and establish the docks as a world class waterway
• Introduce proposals for sustainable, innovative and multi-functional use
• Provide landowners and investors with a coherent approach to forward planning

The Strategy is being progressed in three stages.

Stage 1, completed in July 2010, provided a comprehensive analysis of the current use of the site, connections to the inland waterway network, and its relationship with the City Centre.

Stage 2, completed in October 2010, identified uses that might be appropriate for individual docks to increase activity and animation, encourage year round activity and improve the profile of the area.

Stage 3, commenced in January 2011, will refine these proposals. Using feedback from a consultation programme it will lead to a detailed waterspace plan with recommendations for short and long term uses, and a ‘water use matrix’ with guidance on the size and scale of new development, servicing requirements, and design principles.

A Steering Group led by British Waterways and made up of representatives from Gower Street Estates, Homes and Communities Agency, Liverpool Vision, Liverpool City Council and the Federation of Liverpool Waterfront Residents is overseeing this work with a view to launching the ‘strategy’ at the Liverpool Boat Show in May.
