Engage helps residents improve quality of life
Engage is a resident-led initiative supported by Liverpool Vision that brings together leaseholders and residents from Liverpool Waterfront and City Centre apartments to discuss issues affecting them, agree solutions and take collective action.
Liverpool’s city centre and waterfront residential population has exploded in the past decade. Estimates suggest that there are over 30,000 residents in the city centre/docklands area in over 11500 properties.
Perhaps not surprisingly it didn’t take these Liverpool leaseholders long to start organising themselves to tackle the issues they confront with this new life style. Now significantly ahead of the game compared with all other UK cities, Engage speaks on behalf of this large group of people and is the first point of contact for all who are working to improve the quality of life for everyone in the city centre.
Liverpool Vision Chief executive Max Steinberg was a keynote speaker at the seminar that Engage organised last September called ‘Our City Our Place?’ which was a huge success. Liverpool Vision’s Head of City Centre and Urban Design Jenny Douglas commented:
"‘The people who chose to live in the city centre contribute enormously to making Liverpool’s city centre a special place. They contribute to the local economy and bring life and vitality. It’s important that these people have an excellent quality of life; that they feel part of a community and that the buildings they live in are well managed and maintained.
"We applaud the ground breaking work Engage is doing and we are helping them in a dialogue with developers to ensure that the apartments that are built in the future are shaped by the insights and experiences of those who are living in the centre now."
This year Engage will be holding its 4th Annual Conference at the prestigious BT Convention Centre at Kings Dock on 21st May at which a report will be made on the exceptional work that has been undertaken to develop a kite-mark style system for improving the levels of service being delivered by Managing Agents across the city. This project called Engage Endorsed is already being noted by influential figures at regional and national levels. Gerry Proctor chair of Engage explained:
"It is vital that we get the relationship right between those who live in apartments and those whom we pay through our service charge to manage them. Engage Endorsed will make a big difference to lots of people, helping to create a great living environment for apartment dwellers."
Uniquely Engage has established a website with the help of Liverpool City Council and Plus Dane Group that links every apartment complex in the city. It is a one-stop site for all things that affect city centre residents and leaseholders. Gerry continues:
"Liverpool has developed a rich source of experience and wisdom about apartment living in recent years that Engage is putting at the service of the redevelopment programme in the city. It is very much welcomed."
