£400m North Liverpool revamp project launched

A major £400m project was launched yesterday, to help boost business and jobs in north Liverpool.

Dubbed The Beautiful North – Show Your Beautiful Face, it aims to draw together community groups, local entrepreneurs, housing associations and the council to work together on improving the Anfield, Kirkdale and Walton areas to make them more appealing to investors.

Improving the environment to make it more appealing as a place to live and work was a key goal of the scheme, launched at the Isla Gladstone conservatory. Erika Rushton, director of Neighbourhood Investor at housing association PlusDane, said all the 40-plus organisations had spending power amounting to more than £400m between them for the project, which will take place over several years.

They will work together rather than individually to tackle one problem at a time.

Ms Rushton added: “The demand for housing in south Liverpool over the last 10 years, for example, has gone up from 300 houses to 2,300. But demand in the north has stagnated.

“There needs to be change in a positive way, and it’s about doing that with development agencies and private developers, who are coming along to us and saying they will do up houses and they’ve got local people to work with them.

“But then, it’s OK to do up a house, but if there’s anti-social behaviour next door and dog mess everywhere, people won’t want to take the houses. This project puts it all together as a package.”
